To say this little 1,400 sq ft ranch-style home in Crieve Hall was a labor of love is an understatement. I bought this house to live in with my 4 year old son only a few months after my father passed away. The irony of purchasing my first solo house without my father’s opinion, who was a homebuilder, was not lost on me. I bought this home with renovation in mind, yet my lifelong advisor was no longer available for my many “what if” questions along the way. I think he’d be proud of the transformation we gave this little home of ours. My mom was such an integral part of the renovation that began only a short time after I moved in. Overall, it was the perfect distraction at the time we needed it most.
What began as a 3 bed, 1.5 bath home with a half bath for a “master” bathroom with approximately 1,200 sq ft became a 3 bed, 2 full bath home over 1,450 sq ft. It may not sound that impressive in black and white, but the impact of having a full 4 piece true master bath, expanded footprint to the master bedroom and a full walk-in closet to our (mainly my) daily lives was HUGE.
The master bedroom barely held my king-sized bed and had, what I’d consider, a coat closet as a master closet with the retro green attached half bath shown above. The renovation included an expanded footprint to the existing space to include a walk-in closet plus a full bath with a walk-in tiled shower, double vanity and separate toilet area (that remained in the existing half bath). I basically moved in with Logan for the duration of the project which took about three months to complete.
With the addition, the backyard got an upgrade as well with a covered back patio. Although the yard was a large, parklike setting, the original home had no deck or patio space to sit and enjoy it. There was also no yard access other than the garage entry which wasn’t the best flow for the home. I added a door leading into the eat-in kitchen from the covered patio which was definitely the right call.
The next project I took on was transforming the sea of beige that was the “updated” kitchen to a more modern color scheme with upgraded finishes. The kitchen renovation, in comparison to being displaced from my bed and bathroom for over three months, was a pretty painless process and only took about a week to complete.
The lineup for the kitchen makeover included painting the cabinets a clean white, updating the floor tile to a neutral grey, adding a subway tile backsplash and graphic accent tile to the buffet area, a new, a black granite under mount sink, quartzite counters and all new hardware and fixtures. Basically the only thing that remained were the existing stainless appliances and the cabinets themselves.
We have since moved on from our ranch in Crieve Hall, but it will forever hold a special place in our hearts and our memories.
